UK opens 2018/19 Chevening scholarships

The United Kingdom (UK) Government is inviting applications for the 2018/19 Chevening scholarships to enable successful applicants to study for master’s degree programmes at leading British universities.

The applications are open from August 7 and will close on November 7, according to a statement issued by the British High Commission in Lilongwe.

Tett: Alumni contribute at
the highest levels

Traditionally, the Chevening scholarships are awarded to individuals who demonstrate leadership potential as well as having strong academic backgrounds. The scholarship provides full financial support to study for any eligible master’s degree programme at any UK university while gaining access to a wide range of exclusive academic, professional and cultural events.

According to the statement, there are more than 1 500 scholarships on offer globally for the 2018/19 academic year, representing a significant investment from the UK Government towards developing the leaders of tomorrow.

Reads the statement in part: “The scholarships support study at UK universities—mostly one year taught master’s degrees—for individuals with demonstrable potential to become future leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers.”

British High Commissioner Holly Tett, in the statement, emphasised that Chevening scholars share the best the UK has to offer with those they meet in the UK, and then share the best the UK has to offer when they return home.

She said: “The role Chevening scholars and Chevening alumni play in building bridges between countries is as important now as it has ever been. In Malawi, Chevening alumni contribute at the highest levels across the government, the private sector, media and society.”

One of the recipients from last year, The Nation deputy editor Edyth Kambalame, is currently pursuing a master’s degree in gender and media at the University of Sussex.

Chevening scholarships are the UK Government’s global scholarship programme funded by the Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations.

To date, there are over 48 000 Chevening alumni around the world who comprise an influential and highly regarded global network. To apply, visit www.chavening.org/apply. n
